Abstract: THE PROSPECT AND CHALLENGES OF COST ACCOUNTING IN THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY

This research explores the prospects and challenges associated with cost accounting in the healthcare industry in Abuja. The study's objectives are to evaluate the role of cost accounting in healthcare financial management, assess its impact on cost control, and identify the challenges faced by healthcare providers. A survey design was utilized, gathering data from 300 healthcare financial managers and cost accountants, calculated using Taro Yamane's formula. A case study of a major hospital in Abuja provided comprehensive insights. The reliability coefficient score was 0.88. Findings indicate that cost accounting plays a crucial role in healthcare financial management by providing detailed cost information and facilitating better decision-making. However, challenges such as complex regulations and data collection difficulties were identified. Recommendations include enhancing training for healthcare cost accountants, simplifying regulatory requirements, and integrating cost accounting with other financial management practices to improve overall cost control.
